A team of investigators (of which this author is part) has renewed efforts to find and contact the very last living veterans of the Army Air Force who were at Roswell during the time of a UFO crash that occurred in early July of 1947. Some of these now octogenarian witnesses have opened up publicly for the very first time- and some of what they say can only be described as chilling. If the testimony of one particular Roswell vet holds true, then the Air Force explanation of a Mogul balloon train accounting for a crashed UFO cannot be. This is because the vet maintains that the Provost Marshal of the base had issued to him the most extreme and dreaded of commands: He was ordered to "shoot to kill" anyone who ever tried to enter the hangar in which the crash debris was stored. One would not be commanded to kill over a balloon. Serviceman Calvin Cox has held secret his disturbing Roswell experience for decades. He was ordered to never speak of it. And he never has...until now.

THE ULTIMATE COMMAND

To "shoot to kill" on officer's orders supersedes the normal protocol to apprehend and arrest. It means to instantly end another person's life as judge, jury and executioner.

One such serviceman dutiful enough to do this was PFC Calvin Cox. Cox is pictured in the Roswell Army Air Field Base Yearbook for 1947 and other information indicates that he was attached to the 3rd Photo Lab. Cox was found by me during the course of trying to locate those who were with the Photo Lab at that time. One serviceman who was also affiliated with the Lab, Gene Neiderschmidt, had suggested that I contact a Calvin Cox "who knew some things he might now be open to talking about." Gene explained that Cox had actually guarded the hangar where the debris was taken. Gene added, "and what he tells you is true. He would have done anything if he was ordered to, anything. He was a tough kind of guy."

I reached Calvin Cox by phone very recently. His story was one that he was at first reluctant to tell. But what he did relate was remarkable. Calvin explained that he held Top Secret clearance. When the debris from the Roswell crash was being brought to base, Calvin states the he was commanded to perform very urgent guard duty at Hangar 84. It would be a four hour shift. The Provost Marshal, Major Edwin Easley, instructed Calvin to guard a portion of the inside of the huge hangar. And Calvin did this. But what gives him pause even today are the forceful orders that he was given that extraordinary day:

Major Easley had commanded Calvin in absolute terms to "shoot and kill anyone who tried to enter the hangar that was not authorized to do so."

And Calvin adds that he was then told by the Major that he would not be using his standard-issue weapon for guard duty. Instead, Easley issued Calvin a submachine gun to be used with deadly force should anyone try to cross:

"Hangar 84 at Roswell Base Today"

Cox said that there was a guard placed both outside and inside the entrances to the hangar. He was not to go beyond a rope that was placed just a few feet inside the hangar entrance. Despite this, Calvin had the opportunity to view some of the incoming Roswell debris from a distance. He saw some of the crash material sticking out of a 60 foot flatbed, filling perhaps just half of the trailer's capacity. He indicates that it appeared that the crash material may have been metal-like, but that he could tell it was protruding out in beams and appeared shiny and smooth. Some of it may have had a burnished or tarnished coloring. Far back in the poorly lit hangar he could see about 30 feet of strange, structured metal-like material that was similar to what he had seen in the flatbed.

Cox states that at no time during this event did he see anything resembling a balloon or balloon train. He remembers the newspapers later stating that the disc was found out to have been a balloon after all- and personally knowing that was not true but being unable to say anything.

Calvin believes that Intelligence Officer Major Jesse Marcel's late-in-life disclosures about finding material in the desert not from Earth are true. Calvin says that Jesse was "straight forward" and that Jesse was set up as a "fall guy."

After the crash Calvin noticed that there were personnel around the base in great numbers that he knew to have been affiliated with intelligence agencies, including both the FBI and the OSI.

When I asked him what happened to the debris, Cox said that he knew that pilot Captain Oliver "Pappy" Henderson was involved in flying out some of it out to another location. (Many years ago researchers documented that Henderson had confessed to family that he had personally seen the alien bodies and strange debris.)

Calvin today maintains that what he guarded must have been of such importance that it affected national security. And he believes that what crashed was "piloted." When I asked by whom, he replied with a question: "Do you believe in aliens?"

THE MAJOR, HIS ORDERS AND HIS CONFESSION

"Major Edwin Easley, Provost Marsha"l

Major Edwin Easley was the Provost Marshal at Roswell Army Air Field in July of 1947. A Provost Marshal is the head of the Military Police group at a base of military operations. He is the officer in charge of this unit and thus is responsible for military discipline, maintaining order and other police functions. Easley was the one who issued the kill order to Calvin Cox. It is believed that Easley, as Provost Marshal, also secured the crash site.

When Easley was reached in 1991 by researcher Kevin Randle, he was asked if he thought that they were "following the right path" on the true nature of the Roswell crash. Easley asked, "What do you mean?" When it was clarified as referring to "the extraterrestrial path" Easley responded, "Well let me put it to you this way- that's not the wrong path." He would say no more, indicating that he was "sworn to secrecy."

His daughter, Nancy Johnston Easley has stated that her father said to her that he had made a promise to President Truman not to reveal anything. During his last days Easley finally confirmed to his family members (and to his physician Dr. Harold Granik) that there was a 'real crash' that occurred "North of Roswell." When asked what he had seen out there in the desert, Edwin replied:"Creatures."

"I can tell you here and now, and God is my witness and I believe in God, that when I die I'll tell everybody what I saw. And it'll be the same story." -- Charles Hickson, quoted by authors Ralph ">did make headlines all over the world.

On October 11, 1973, Charles Hickson (42) and Calvin Parker (19) enjoyed a leisurely early evening of fishing from a river pier at the abandoned Shaupeter Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Suddenly, as documented in their separate accounts, they were distracted by something behind them and turned to get the shock of their lives. A short distance away, a strange, domed oval object making a buzzing sound hovered just above the ground, and bizarre-looking beings had exited the craft, floating through the air, moving right toward the fishermen. One grabbed Hickson's arms with claw-like hands, creating pain in his left shoulder, and he immediately became immobile. Another entity grabbed Parker by the arm and he lost consciousness.

Hickson and Parker were floated off the ground and taken inside the craft, its interior a place of intense light with only a viewing screen on a wall. The entities totaled three, all robot-like, around five feet in height. They had no discernible necks, had slits for mouths and pointed noses and ears. Where eyes might have been there were either little slits, or perhaps nothing. They were covered with grayish, elephant-like skin and feet, and functioned with claw-like hands at the ends of long arms.

A device appearing like a large eye emerged from a wall and Hickson recalled that it moved up, down and all around him, as if scanning his entire body. The beings were observed to perform their work stiffly, mechanically and quickly. One emitted a buzzing noise. After examining the two men, the three disappeared briefly before returning and floated Hickson and Parker back outside. Hickson fell as soon as his feet touched the ground, while Parker was apparently in shock and just stood where he was put. The next thing the men knew, the craft was speeding skyward and out of sight.

A very shaken Charlie Hickson contacted the sheriff and by midnight he and Parker were seated in a room at the sheriff's office, answering questions posed by a no-nonsense officer. One maneuver that lent immense credence to their claims occurred when the sheriff left the room briefly on the pretense of something he had to take care of. Unknown to the two men, a tape recorder was secretly recording their words in his absence to try to catch them in a fantastic lie. On the contrary, however, they continued speaking to one another about their experience, trying to make sense of it, and Calvin Parker's recurrent concern in the conversation was that if they tell people about the experience, the creatures will return in and do something to them. The sincerity in their voices is overwhelming (the tape, of very poor quality by this time and in need of a digital cleanup, was recently put up on the Internet for listening, free of charge, at http://www.konsulting.com/audio clips.htm ).

By the following morning, Hickson and his wife noticed his left arm bleeding at the spot where the being had grabbed him, and he was destined for a wealth of nightmares as time progressed.

Both men passed polygraph tests and hypnosis sessions were invoked to get the full story. The late astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek, former Air Force chief UFO consultant (who started out highly skeptical but eventually viewed UFOs as a real and important subject of scientific study) walked away highly impressed after speaking with them, convinced by that time that UFO abductions were a legitimate phenomenon. In fact, a succession of scientists and investigators found Hickson and Parker honest and deeply concerned about their experience. Hickson, older and more laid back, handled the encounter far better than Calvin Parker, who suffered a breakdown and remained devastated. Hickson commented to the Associated Press of his close friend, "He's not the same man as before. It just ruined him." Even Sheriff Glenn Ryder, who remembered getting a phone call from Hickson at a pay phone around 11:00 p.m. on that fateful night, was impressed with the situation, whatever its meaning: "Calvin Parker was just hysterical. He was having fits. I took them in the patrol car to the sheriff's office."

Other people had reported a possible UFO that night, but statements were generally vague, some making reference to a streak of light in the sky. And so went the Pascagoula case for almost 30 years, another bizarre little UFO story consigned to history, believed by some and dismissed by others. But then the unexpected happened: A new witness stepped forward.

BYRON BAY, NSW - THE UFOS OF BYRON BAYPhotographer Mark Abriel has been snapping some strange things in the sky over his home town of Byron Bay, NSW - Unidentified Flying Objects to be exact!

Mark was driving back from surfing and filming at Lennox Head, just south of Byron Bay, last August (2000) when he saw his first strange object in the sky.

"It was close to dusk and I was just south of Broken Head, a beautiful rainforest surfing spot close to Byron Bay," Mark recalls.

"As I approached the road turning off to Broken Head, I saw what looked like a large, golden disc hovering above the trees. It was sort of ethereal looking, not solid.

"At the speed I was driving I had passed the object in a few seconds. I made the turn into Broken Head, stopped the car and looked back, but the high tree-line obscured the view."

Mark didn^1t see the golden disc again, but he says he's seen many other strange objects appear in the sky, particularly around Mount Warning, known to local Aboriginals as 'Wollumbin' and considered a sacred area.

And he says he's not alone, with many locals approaching him with stories of their own about strange lights in the sky since he started going public about his pictures.

Mark has caught numerous strange images on film and says he is "amazed" at what he has seen so far.

"I don't think that anyone could argue that this is not unique phenomena," Mark says.

"[On one trip] I noticed a sparkling spherical light hovering above the tree-line. It began moving slowly to the left, for about two or three minutes, then dropped behind the ridge and out of view! I had a video camera with me, and filmed the object as it traversed the ridge."

"Since that afternoon, I have returned to the same spot, and other vantage points around the Byron Bay area, and filmed what appears to be the same phenomenon, all the way from an hour before dark till just on nightfall. I have filmed the phenomenon with both digital video as well

as 35mm still cameras using professional slide film."

There can be few very people within the realms of cryptozoology and ufology that have never heard of the so-called Flatwoods Monster, or Braxton County Monster, of 1952 - a story that is told in-depth in Frank Feschino's 2004 book, THE BRAXTON COUNTY MONSTER: THE COVER-UP OF THE FLATWOODS MONSTER REVEALED.

And as Feschino notes in his book: "On the night of September 12, 1952, a shocked American public sought answers when strange unidentified objects were seen flying through the sky over Washington, DC, and the eastern United States..."

He continued: "One of the strange objects crash-landed on a rural hilltop in Flatwoods, West Virginia..." Feschino also noted that a group of schoolboys were witness to the descent of the device and, with two adults, "...headed off to look for the object. Soon a twelve-foot tall being from the downed craft terrified these innocent people."

So, what was the monstrous entity? A cryptid? An alien? Some form of definitively Fortean beast? Or something else? Over the years, a whole range of theories have surfaced, and, as with so many such cases, the debate continues.

And, on this latter point of the Machiavellian hand of officialdom possibly playing a role in the Flatwoods affair, I stumbled across something the other day that makes me wonder if it may well have some bearing on what was seen at Flatwoods.

Call me crazy (and doubtless some will!), but I think the following data - which is directly relative to the use of superstitions and paranormal entities and ideas in warfare - may well have a bearing on the diabolical beast of Flatwoods.

A couple of days ago, I obtained a copy of an April 14, 1950 RAND publication titled THE EXPLOITATION OF SUPERSTITIONS FOR PURPOSES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE, written by Jean M. Hungerford, for the the U.S. Air Force.

The 37-page document is a truly fascinating one and delves into some very strange areas. But, what really caught my eye, was a section of the document that quoted from a book titled MAGIC: TOP SECRET, which was written in 1949 by one Jasper Maskelyne, a fascinating character (as the name-link demonstrates) who was up his absolute neck in new and novel ways to fool the enemy.

Hungerford quotes the following from Maskelyne in her report, which concerns a truly alternative psychological warfare operation that occurred during the Second World War, and less than a decade before the Flatwoods Monster was seen:

"Our men...were able to use illusions of an amusing nature in the Italian mountains, especially when operating in small groups as advance patrols scouting out the way for our general moves forward. In one area, in particular, they used a device which was little more than a gigantic scarecrow, about twelve feet high, and able to stagger forward under its own power and emit frightful flashes and bangs. This thing scared several Italian Sicilian villages appearing in the dawn thumping its deafening way down their streets with great electric blue sparks jumping from it; and the inhabitants, who were mostly illiterate peasants, simply took to their heels for the next village, swearing that the Devil was marching ahead of the invading English."

Hungerford continued to quote from Maskelyne's book in her report: "Like all tales spread among uneducated folk (and helped, no doubt, by our agents), this story assumed almost unimaginable proportions. Villages on the route of our advance began to refuse sullenly to help the retreating Germans, and to take sabotage against them; and then, instead of waiting for our troops to arrive with food and congratulations of their help, the poor people fled, thus congesting the roads along which German motorized transport was struggling to retire. The German tankmen sometimes cut through the refugees and this inflamed feeling still more, and what began almost as a joke was soon a sharp weapon in our hands which punished the Germans severely, if indirectly, for several critical weeks."

There are a number of issues worth noting here. First, the height of the Flatwoods Monster and the British Army's devilish scarecrow were the same: 12-feet. In addition, the cover of Frank Feschino's book shows the Flatwoods Monster emitting lights. And the 12-foot scarecrow in Italy gave off "frightful flashes and bangs" and had "great electric blue sparks jumping from it."

Second, the RAND report that specifically refers to this Italian escapade - that Jasper Maskelyne described in his MAGIC: TOP SECRET book - was prepared for psychological warfare planners in the U.S. Air Force. And, in his book on the beast of Flatwoods, Feschino notes that the Air Force took careful interest in the Flatwoods affair and what was being reported on the affair by the media.

The RAND report was submitted to the Air Force in April 1950, and Flatwoods occurred in September 1952. Is it possible that in this two-year period USAF psychological warfare planners created their very own - albeit updated and modified - version of the British Army's 12-foot-tall flashing monster to try and gauge what its reaction might be when unleashed upon an unsuspecting populace?

There's also the settings, too: the British Army's operation was focused on little, isolated villages in Italy. And Flatwoods is a little, rural town in Braxton County, West Virginia that, even as late as 2000, had a population of less than 350.

Those who suspect the the Flatwoods Monster was some form of cryptozoological creature, Fortean entity, or alien being, may well scoff at my speculations and musings.

However, when we can say for sure that the British Army was using 12-foot, illuminated scarecrow-style critters for psychological warfare reasons in the Second World War, is it really a stretch to think that the USAF might have tried something similar in 1952 with their very own 12-foot-tall freak?

One final thing: the foreword to Frank Feschino's book was penned by acclaimed ufologist, Stanton T. Friedman, who wrote the book TOP SECRET MAJIC (with a "j"). This should not be confused with Jasper Maskelyne's MAGIC TOP SECRET (with a "g)!
