The existence of "Bigfoot" has been one of the the most well known myths in our culture, with thousands of "sightings" and "encounters" reported in the news, this non-existent beast has become a celebrity over the years. Bigfoot is a great example of what pseudoscience is, and how it can flourish over the public. There is an enormous amount of people in the world that will not budge on the fact that this beast is currently strolling around somewhere in the woods, waiting for another lucky bystander, to shoot that million dollar photo of him. There are even research organizations completely dedicated to finding more evidence of Bigfoot's existence, BFRO (Bigfoot Field Research Organization) being the oldest and largest. Animal Planet recently launched their new series called Finding Bigfoot, which follows around "researchers" on their quest to find the ficitional beast. Their is no absolute, concrete evidence that Bigfoot does not exist, but well say that the scientists' and rational thinkers' side is winning by a tad. Almost every scientist out there shuts out the fact that this beast could be skipping around our woods here in America. One would think that after investing so much time and energy into something that has basically been proven as pseudoscience, why waste your time. Many other people believe otherwise. Because the myth has become so popular over the decades it opens opportunities at money for hoax pictures, which can further skew the credibility of any real evidence found. I believe that the psychology behind the farfetched myth is that it is simply more entertaining to believe that there is some giant, hairy sasquatch walking around out there. People that live pretty plain and boring lives can get excitement from the suspense that one day they might encounter Bigfoot, I mean a guy in an ape suit with too much time on his hands.

Nahu is author of UFOS: GOD FROM INNER SPACE. Here's Nahu's recent comment he left me on Facebook about an experience he had with Bigfoot and researcher Eric Beckjord (deceased.)

Have you ever heard of Eric Beckjord? He is or was the director of a group who investigated Sasquatch and other anomalous phenomena. I talked with him on the phone once and got into a semi-argument about my contention that I could find a Bigfoot using my psychic abilities. This was back in 1982. He challenged me to meet him at a coffee house in Seattle and sit down, have coffee and talk about it. I was surprised when I saw him--he is a huge Swede, blond bigfoot. Anyway to make a long story short I picked a spot intuitively out in the Weyerhaser forests near Sasquatch Park B.C. We stayed a couple days and decided to give it up due to excessive rain. The upshot of this story is that I got a phone call from Beckjord about a week or so later and a group that monitors Bigfoot activity and reports in Washington reported that someone reported spotting a bigfoot right in the area where I took him to explore. I always felt an empathic aura with this much maligned being.

I told Nahu that Erik and I had corresponded a few times; Eric liked the fact I took the paranormal Bigfoot idea seriously, but he argued with me on the particulars. One time he refused to join a Yahoo group I had going at the time -- I think it was called Maverick Bigfoot Research or something -- because we didn't go far enough!

As most Bigfoot and cryptid/o researchers know, Eric had quite the reputation for being argumentative. But I had no negative interactions with him, even when he'd shoot off an email to me that I was "wrong" -- he never attacked me in public or spread lies. Though I realize he did so in regards to others. Like many other Fortean researchers, whether they're writing about UFOs, Bigfoot, ghosts,... Beckjord was a "troublemaker" and his theories, as well as his style, were not presented in the best way. And yet there is a there there. With so much of this stuff it's easy to throw that messy baby out with the bathwater.

Nahu commented further:

He seemed like such a huge bear of a man. Aries, as I recall, like to challenge. We had a number of outright disagreements. But once out in the woods, he seemed like he was in his element. What his problem was with me, he resented the idea that I had the arrogance to think I could attract a bigfoot the first time out when he had been out on expeditions looking for him for five years and hadn't seem more than a glimpse of him. His interest in me was primarily a challenge and only secondarily curiosity, I think. At that time, I presented my theory to him my that Bigfoot was an intrad-dimensional being recurring at certain cyclic points from the collective unconscious, so to speak, in attunement to an individual's vibration. Like the white buffalo story. Native Americans looked upon bigfoot as a medicine--I agree--he definitely had the ability to scare the sickness right out of someone, almost like the bogey man in caucasian mythology.

Oh, by the way, I believe the year was 1981 during the winter season. I had a couple distinct times I felt I was quite close to contacting this intra-dimensional being, once while in the woods of Sasquatch Park while camping, and another time in a wooded area near Escondido, California. While living in Oakridge, Oregon when is pretty primitve, heavily wooded and quite near an area as I recall named Blue Springs, where Sasquatch was often seen I felt his presence also. I never felt any negative energy, just calm, as though I was close to a very ancient, spiritual fount. I could sense elements of my own subconscious fears holding a face-to-face off from happening. Although to be honest, I was never really afraid of this being.

On another note,I did feel some extremely strange vibrations while out in the West Virginia hills near where the Silver Bridge collapsed that gave me the willies, though.

On to Nahu. Nahu also lives in Eugene, Oregon (so does Bigfoot researcher Autumn Williams, whose mother, Sali Shepherd-Wolford wrote about her experiences with "paranormal Bigfoot" in Valley of the Skookum) and is a healer, psychic and author.I interviewed him a couple of years ago for UFO Magazine, focusing on his book UFOS: GOD FROM INNER SPACE.

STEPHENVILLE -- It has been one month since people reported seeing strange unidentified flying objects over Stephenville, causing a worldwide stir among curious journalists and UFO enthusiasts.

Since then, investigators have interviewed more than 100 witnesses and dug their way through grainy pictures and shaky video of supposed UFOs. Now they say they may finally have found one video of a flying craft that they can't explain -- but the photo's ownership is in question.

The military initially denied, then confirmed that it had fighter jets in the area during the sightings, leading to conspiracy theories and speculation -- including that the jets were chasing UFOs from a restricted-flight zone.

A speaker captivated an audience of hundreds at Stephenville's Tarleton State University with UFO tales that seemed strikingly similar to the accounts given by witnesses of the recent sightings. One of the university's astronomy professors is considering beginning his own investigation.

And the town of Stephenville, a farming community about 70 miles southwest of Fort Worth, was shocked by the descending media hordes before deciding that it was all great fun. Now many think it may be profitable as well.

"It seems like the feeding frenzy is over," said Kathie Whiteman, manager of a bookstore at the edge of Tarleton State University. "Now the fad has begun."

INVESTIGATORS

About 50 people say they saw impossibly bright lights in the skies above the Stephenville area Jan. 8. Not long after, they gathered in nearby Dublin to talk about what they saw with interviewers from the Mutual UFO Network.

Despite about 400 pushing and shoving onlookers, seven MUFON investigators gathered information from respectable sources, said Kenneth Cherry of Keller, director of the organization's Texas chapter.

Cherry said investigators are still talking to witnesses who did not want to be a part of that public event, often visiting them at home. He expects that more than 200 people will eventually be interviewed. So far, the network has interviewed about 75 percent of them, he said.

But it hasn't been easy, Cherry said.

"Some reporters are absolutely demanding information or are following us around when we interview witnesses," Cherry said. "And these are people who want to avoid publicity."

Besides collating data, the organization has filed a number of Freedom of Information requests with the military, checked with the Federal Aviation Administration and looked at meteorological patterns.

The network hopes to eventually determine exactly where and when the objects were spotted, along with their flight paths.

"There is a compelling piece of video," he said. "But there is a dispute over ownership. Everything else has been eliminated."

The organization hopes to announce its findings in its magazine's April edition.

MILITARY CONSPIRACIES

Dozens of people in the area reported seeing UFOs -- and fighter jets -- around dusk on that date.

Maj. Karl Lewis, a spokesman for the 301st Fighter Wing at Naval Air Station Fort Worth, initially said that no F-16s or other aircraft from the base were in the area the night of Jan. 8.

Lewis said the object may have been an illusion caused by two commercial airplanes. Lights from the aircraft would seem unusually bright and appear orange because of the setting sun, he said.

But later, the military changed its tune, saying that 10 F-16s from the 457th Fighter Squadron were training between 6 and 8 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Brownwood military operating area, which includes Stephenville and Erath County.

The Mutual UFO Network says the admission adds credibility to their witnesses, who reported seeing military jets chasing the flying objects. That's leading conspiracy Web sites to the conclusion that UFOs invaded restricted military airspace.

TARLETON STATE

Since 1981, Hastings has spoken at more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide, including Stanford University and the University of Texas at Austin. Last month, he spoke to an audience of hundreds in the student center on the topic "UFOs: The Secret Story." After presenting documents and a slide show, he said the Stephenville UFO fit into a pattern of sightings, including:

Bright lights flying in ways no modern airplane could duplicate.

Military jets trying and failing to keep up with the objects.

A nearby nuclear weapons or energy production facility.

"A number of the documents refer to UFOs repeatedly violating highly sensitive airspace over nuclear weapons sites, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where nuclear weapons are designed," he told the crowd.

Tarleton's Michael Hibbs, an associate professor of math and physics, and Ron DiIulio, director of astronomy lab programs at the University of North Texas in Denton, said a few weeks ago that they would gather data and interview witnesses in connection with the sightings.

They have not started yet, Hibbs said, and they aren't 100 percent sure they ever will.

"We wanted to try to explain this with science and logic, but we haven't gone out there and done the work," Hibbs said. "We were really concerned with all the hype. We want to wait until that dies down."

STEPHENVILLE

Reporters swarmed the town of Stephenville soon after the UFO sightings were made public. At first residents seemed shocked; then they started having fun.

The town square in Stephenville is still dominated by a large white and red courthouse and a cow statue showing that area dairy farmers sell 223 million annually.

But alien heads, spaceships and UFO parking signs have crept into the area.

In one corner of the town square, a travel shop displays a poster featuring a UFO and offers trips that are "out of this world." Next to it is a tattoo shop featuring extraterrestrial tattoos. In another corner, a bookstore offers UFO parking on the roof.

"Of course the people who have actually seen it are not satisfied and want more answers," said Treva Thompson of the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce. "But it has died down. Some businesses are still using it as a marketing opportunity, but I feel like this is something that's going to pass over eventually."

According to Stephenville High School teacher Kimberlea Adams, the science club pre-sold 1,200 UFO shirts at 10 each. The club expects to award a 1,000 scholarship to a deserving senior for at least the next four years.

"We turned over the sales to Coyote [Designs] and they are going to donate the proceeds back to us," Adams said. "So far they have sold about 250 more shirts. We haven't quite decided what to do with the extra money."

The College Store near Tarleton recently ordered glow-in-the-dark UFO shirts, manager Whiteman said.

"I wish I had jumped onto this earlier," she said. "I'm hoping the fad will last at least through May."

Not them! Not you! Not even me! Because I probably don't know what I'm freaking talking about!

Okay, folks, ever since that harmless weather balloon (HA!) crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, there was a gigantic explosion of UFO sightings all over the world! Everyone was seeing flying saucers everywhere and everyone was being abducted by aliens! (Don't mind me, I'm just attempting to incite a riot of dramatic effect here.) Then suddenly the mysterious Shadow Men were seen lurking around UFO eyewitnesses' doorsteps to shut them up, to silence them, threatening cruel punishment if they parted their tender lips to the Press, Police, FBI, NSA, CIA, IBM, KFC, anyone and everyone who would listen! There's no room for conspiratorial theory here, just outright pulling the wool over innocent people=s eyes. These insidious intruders instigate the concealment of dark secrets, raw facts, and debilitating data, so people will remain in the dark. But why? What's so frightening? What's out there anyway? Monsters under the bed? The Bogeyman? Santa Claus in the nude? I dunno -- I'm still trying to figure that out myself.

Hollywood has glorified these ominously sinister Dark Intruders -- but it's a romantic ruse that is deceiving people who just want to know what the heck's going on behind closed doors. The amusing Men in Black movies may hold minuscule grains of truth, but not much, because they're filled with impossible outworldishly fantastic boat-loads of ridiculous gobbledygook. That's not to say I didn't enjoy them, because I did -- immensely! But I had to just keep in mind that I was observing sheer fantasy, in contrast to the actual facts that I knew concerning the real Men in Black mythology -- or notions that are as close to actual factual facts as remotely ambiguously possible, or at least counterfeit facsimiles ther.

On the other hand, my left hand in fact, the extravagant sci-fi chiller thriller flick called The Shadow Men is closer to the mark - somewhat vaguely at any rate. At least it urges you to reluctantly ask hypothetical questions, such as: "Why are they just men, and wearing only black? Are any of them cross-dressers wearing black dresses?" But more importantly you will ask, "Where's all the Women in Black?" I'd say, probably at funerals. And you'll probably ask, "Why do they wear those ominous dark shades? And what's behind them? Big black bug eyes? Red eyes? Cat's eyes? No eyes? What?!" There are numerous blatantly conflicting reports on this (even in my own personal notes) -- which means that nobody really knows anything.

Here's more quagmire-drenched inquiries: Are they only night-dwellers? Are they sensitive to sunlight? Do these sinister creatures live only in darkness? Are they afraid of the light? Are they satanic cultists? Who are they? What are they? And what are they doing here? Why are they threatening and shutting people up? What are they covering up? Yes, we know there are UFOs and aliens out there, so what are they doing here? Are they planning an invasion of the Earth and so they're hiding that little dark secret from us? Alright, it's just a theory so far, but I think I'm on to something here. I'm getting closer and closer, day by day, in my not so futile effort of unearthing the truth about what on Earth is happening around here -- and what's really happening out there -- up in the sky and out in space in particular where the UFOs seem to be coming from. What the explanations of these unexplained phenomenon are, I don't know yet. But I'm definitely getting closer. You see, I don't have a whole lot of answers. But mostly I have a million more questions. Such as, do they have some kind of cosmic suggestion box where I can drop all my millions of questions?

And let's not forget: If the truth is really out there, where the heck is it?
