"Are the surfaces of super-Earths totally dry or covered in water?" said Nicolas B. Cowan, a Northwestern University astrophysicist at the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA). "We tackled this question by applying known geophysics to astronomy." Massiveterrestrial planets, called "super-Earths," are known to be common in our galaxy, the Milky Way. Now Cowen and a University of Chicago geophysicist report the odds of these planets having an Earth-like climate are much greater than previously thought.Cowan and Dorian Abbot's new model challenges the conventional wisdom which says super-Earths actually would be very unlike Earth -- each would be a waterworld, with its surface completely covered in water. They conclude that most tectonically active super-Earths -- regardless of mass -- store most of their water in the mantle and will have both oceans and exposed continents, enabling a stable climate such as Earth's."Super-Earths are expected to have deep oceans that will overflow their basins and inundate the entire surface, but we show this logic to be flawed," he said. "Terrestrial planets have significant amounts of water in their interior. Super-Earths are likely to have shallow oceans to go along with their shallow ocean basins."In their model, Cowan and Abbot treated the intriguing exoplanets like Earth, which has quite a bit of water in its mantle, the rocky part that makes up most of the volume and mass of the planet. The rock of the mantle contains tiny amounts of water, which quickly adds up because the mantle is so large. And a deep water cycle moves water between oceans and the mantle. (An exoplanet, or extrasolar planet, is a planet outside our solar system.)Cowan presented the findings at a press conference, "Windows on Other Worlds," held Jan. 7 at the 223rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society(AAS) annual meeting in Washington, D.C.He also will discuss the research at a scientific session to be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. EST Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the AAS meeting (Potomac Ballroom D, Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center). The study will be published Jan. 20 in the Astrophysical Journal.Water is constantly traded back and forth between the ocean and the rocky mantle because of plate tectonics, Cowan and Abbot said. The division of water between ocean and mantle is controlled by seafloor pressure, which is proportional to gravity.Accounting for the effects of seafloor pressure and high gravity are two novel factors in their model. As the size of the super-Earths increase, gravity and seafloor pressure also go up."We can put 80 times more water on a super-Earth and still have its surface look like Earth," Cowan said. "These massive planets have enormous seafloor pressure, and this force pushes water into the mantle."It doesn't take that much water to tip a planet into being a waterworld. "If Earth was 1 percent water by mass, we'd all drown, regardless of the deep water cycle," Cowan said. "The surface would be covered in water. Whether or not you have a deep water cycle really matters for planets that are one one-thousandth or one ten-thousandth water."The ability of super-Earths to maintain exposed continents is important for planetary climate. On planets with exposed continents, like Earth, the deep carbon cycle is mediated by surface temperatures, which produces a stabilizing feedback (a thermostat on geological timescales)."Such a feedback probably can't exist in a waterworld, which means they should have a much smaller habitable zone," Abbot said. "By making super-Earths 80 times more likely to have exposed continents, we've dramatically improved their odds of having an Earth-like climate."Cowan and Abbot accede that there are two major uncertainties in their model: that super-Earths have plate tectonics and the amount of water Earth stores in its mantle."These are the two things we would like to know better to improve our model," Cowan said. From the way Sperry posed in full pilot attire near a runway with an aircraft as a backdrop, we might almost think that American Airlines looked forward to publicity on the big screen -- and surely that would be an anomaly, considering the tight-lipped manner in which the major airlines generally reacted to UFO encounters in the fifties (particularly when close approaches resulting in evasive action and passenger panic or injuries occurred), fearful that "saucers" could scare away the flying public. Nevertheless, acquiring Sperry for a segment in "U.F.O." was a definite bonus and helped tremendously to infuse the authenticity necessary for a documentary approach. Unlike the labored Mantell scenes, Captain Sperry's story was laid out in about 90 seconds, and this segment, filmed in an airport environment, must have looked spectacular to the curious on a 1956 theater screen.The scenes move swiftly at this point, and as quickly as the audience is told of Project Sign's origin, a narrator states the agency was soon terminated. Of some interest, in the movie we are told, "On January 9, 1950, the press reported that Project Sign was closed. From now on, the Air Force stated, its only similar activity would be the routine, conventional watch for unidentified flying objects." However, the script varies here, informing us in these words: "On January 9, 1950, the press reported that the Air Force announced that Project Sign, including pictures of flying saucers, none of them genuine, will be placed on public exhibition in the Pentagon."

Some time ago, I was contacted by a guy named Bart Nunnelly, a fellow seeker of all-things-strange. Bart was deep in the process of writing his book, "Mysterious Kentucky: The History, Mystery and Unexplained of the Bluegrass State".

Bart sent me some extracts from his manuscript and asked if I would be willing to add a blurb of endorsement to the book. Well, after having digested the material, I quickly said yes. Fans of the paranormal will find much of interest in the book's pages, as will those with a fascination for the state's mysterious history, Edgar Cayce, Fortean fish-falls, vampires and more.

UFOs feature heavily, too. Early tales of mystery airships and strange lights in the sky set the scene for what is to come, including: a striking 1993 event involving the Jefferson County Police Force; the "Liberty Abduction" case (a reported alien abduction event involving three women - Louise Smith, Mona Stafford and Elaine Thomas) of 1976; the controversial death in 1948 of military pilot Captain Thomas Mantell; and a classic Men in Black-type encounter from 1966. And, of course, no book that details the many and varied UFO encounters in Kentucky can afford to ignore the famous Kelly, Hopkinsville case of August 1955 that can best be described as Close Encounters of the Third Kind meets Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

"And what of cryptozoology?" I hear you ask.

Well, you ain't gonna be disappointed - not at all.

Bart's book contains some highly intriguing data on Bigfoot, werewolves, lake-monsters, lizard-men, goat-men and more. It also contains some fascinating information on Bart's (and his family's) own encounters with mystery critters - some of which offer theories to explain the Bigfoot puzzle that extend much further than the realm of straightforward flesh-and-blood entities.

The book is packed with photos and excellent drawings from Bart (who is a highly talented artist), and skillfully weaves a picture of Kentucky as a state rich in folklore, mysteries, dark woods full of fantastic beasts, and monstrous creatures roaming the countryside by night.

"Mysterious Kentucky" is an excellent book from an author who demonstrates a great affection and love for his home state, first-class knowledge of his subject matter, and a highly entertaining writing style.

Why do some of MUFON's gallery of alien entities rate both a head view and a full-body view? Why do entities M and P get two pictures while entities N and O only get the one? We will probably never know, which is good, because that opens the door to wild speculation."It's not as if the full-body views of entities M and P really add any worthwhile new information. Do I want to see entity M's choice of sleepwear? No. Do I care that entity P has discovered the lie around, lounge around pleasures of Forever Lazy"? Please. Does any of this information help us get to the bottom of the UFO enigma? Not one bit.And yet, there is more information, and, thus, greater impact, in two images then there is in one. So why are the extra images there for some entities, but not for all? To me, this is nothing less than "subliminal manipulation". In my opinion, the MUFON Staff Artist includes extra views of certain entities because he knows this will make more UFO witnesses identify those aliens as the one they encountered. That would mean that MUFON's entire alien entity identification database, if such a thing actually exists, which it must, is fatally flawed. I bet that if I asked the MUFON archivist, if such a thing actually exists, which it must, how many of each of the 16 alien entity types shown in the MUFON Field Investigator's Manual have been identified by UFO witnesses, we would find that the entities with two views are picked far more often than those that are not.Meanwhile, poor, inexplicable entities N and O must never get chosen at all. Which makes sense in any case, because they're both extraordinarily mental, even by MUFON's standards.Looking deeper into the imagery, though, we find that the two views of entity M are gazing admiringly at each other, as if this entity was from a planet "of narcissists"... Entity N has eyes, "but do they see?" Entity O is staring intently at entity P, seemingly envious of P's Forever Lazy (which, not surprisingly, comes in "grey").I am also convinced that there is a hidden message in entity P's strange traffic cop stance. UFO SIGHTING IN REDMOND, WASHINGTON ON SEPTEMBER 22ND 2013 - UFO HOVERING 20 MINUTES

I observed the craft while standing in my garage door entry-way at approximately 8pm. The UFO initially passed over my home in a westward (east to west) direction. I initially noticed the object as it was very bright white in color. It had no strobes like a helicopter or airplane. I had expected it to be a plane or helicopter at initial glance. I watched its flight path thinking it was just going to continue on as most usual aircraft do when passing but this craft stopped and stayed in one location and hovered for about 15-20 minutes and did not move from the location. I did not take my eyes off of it. I have personally observed helicopters hovering but usually they change location of hover and give a very distinctive rotor sound. This craft had no sound. I live in a heavily wooded area and I could see that its position did not change because I could gauge its location/movement against the trees/branches it was above. I estimated the craft to be less than 1000ft from the ground. The object was diamond in shape, white top and bottom with the center pulsating and omitting a bright bluish white light. The weather was rainy with light cloud cover. I could initially see the object with no clouds surrounding it yet there was enough light to see some clouds pass in front of it on occasion. The object seemed to change shape from roundish fuzzy white exterior to a more distinct diamond shape. I had gone to retrieve my cell phone and binoculars to see it or photograph it. I could not get a clear enough photo with my cell phone due to the darkness and limited distance magnification. I was able to observe the craft through low magnification binoculars but could not make any further determination than seeing it with the naked eye. I do have 20/20 vision. I lost sight of the object after returning from inside my house after the initial 20 minutes of it being there.
