The other night I interviewed paranormal researcher Mark Nesbitt on my internet radio show, and I was struck by the number of times Mark described phenomena that occur in haunted areas around Gettysburg, PA (his area of expertise), that sounded familiar to me because I had heard of something similar in UFO cases.

His account of an area on the Gettysburg battlefield, known as the Triangular Field, was the most striking to me. He told me that cameras don't work while in that field. They work fine before entering the field, and after leaving it, but not while they're there. This applies to tourists' hand-held digital cameras, to older 35 mm still cameras, and even to TV and movie cameras that have been brought in for interviews.

If you've read many accounts of UFO encounters, you've probably come across mention of a car that suddenly went dead -- not just stalled, but lost all power completely -- while a UFO was in close proximity, only to come to life again after the object moves away. I don't know what causes it, and I'm sure there are many people reading this now who have a good idea of how the electromagnetic fields could be affecting the cars; but it makes me wonder if something similar is going on in these haunting cases.

There's a lot of buzz around right now about the question -- just what are UFOs? What exactly are the beings who are controlling these craft that are flying around, landing, and interacting with people? Jacques Vallee postulated years ago that they are not extraterrestrial, but are actually the same beings that humans in ages past, referred to as demons, angels or fairies.

Humans who interacted with fairies often reported missing time. This is where the famous Rip Van Winkle story came from. Humans who interact with UFOs and their occupants also frequently report missing time, though usually in terms of hours rather than days or even years. Interestingly, the idea of a plot of land where "nothing ever grew again" was often linked with witches. Either the site where a witch died or where she was buried was said to become barren. Anthropologist Margaret Murray linked European witchcraft with the fairy legends in her book, "The God of the Witches." She postulated that witches were humans who interacted with fairies and learned from them, celebrated with them, and formed a living bridge between humans and fairies -- just like the shamans described in Graham Hancock's latest book, Supernatural. Many modern pagans also study and use shamanistic techniques to contact the spirit world and receive divine guidance.

The interesting thing to me is that many people won't make this connection, because a lot of UFO researchers won't look at paranormal phenomena, and vice versa. This is very unfortunate, because it seems to me that some valuable information is being ignored, and that it will only delay our understanding these phenomena.

I used to work in a cancer treatment center, where a lot of experimental trials were being conducted. I saw some of the paperwork that had to be completed -- complete patient histories, and I mean COMPLETE. Nothing could be left out, no matter how small a detail, because we just didn't know what would have an effect on the patient's condition or on their treatment. Every available detail of their daily life had to be captured and recorded, so that later, other people could go over all the reports and look for patterns. This is how we should be conducting UFO and paranormal research.

At this stage, we can't afford to be excluding anything. It all has to be collected and recorded by the field investigators, and then others need to look over all of the reports and watch for anything that crops up repeatedly. Fortunately, there are several people doing just this kind of work these days, but there are still many who refuse to accept the validity of more than a very narrow line of research. This, to my mind, is like researching the causes of cancer by looking only at what a patient eats, and excluding questions about leisure activities (such as smoking) or work conditions (such as exposure to asbestos.) Sure, you'll come up with a few answers, but you'll miss so many more.

Of course, it has to be repeated that we can't accept everything we hear as truth without checking into it. What I'm saying is that we need to be willing to look at more of the information that's being reported, to investigate it as we would any other piece of evidence, and to prove or disprove it rather than just dismissing it because it sounds too unbelieveable. Let's face it, folks, everything in this field sounds unbelievable at first. One's ability to consider and examine the facts is a reflection of one's own level of awareness of the depth of mysteries in this world. The more outrageous things you see existing in the world, the more you realize the unbelievable could just be true. And you realize just how little we humans really know about the world around us.

And that's where the fun is. That's when you see the world as a fascinating, mystical, incredible place and you marvel at being a part of it. You want to understand your place in it, and to start meeting the other denizens of this universe, this dimension, and others. I saw a comment on another blog that put it incredibly well -- "...open-minded questioning is about imagination and possibility...the UFO is an invitation to expand our consciousness." I would add that psychic and paranormal phenomena also offer us such invitations.

As I stood there for a few seconds it started moving away from me, so I sort of ran toward the road to get a better view. As I did this, the light started to dim until all that was left was a round transparent sphere. It looked like a clear glass ball in the sky. As it kept moving away it slowly disappeared out of sight. I actually stood there for a few minutes with my mouth wide open staring at the sky. This was like nothing Ive seen before. it was big and bright and made no sound. I didnt see any air traffic around for several minutes. I know the patterns the planes take as they approach the airports or take off. I also see fighter jets as they take off from Carswell, they usually fly very high once they get this far. This object was within our atmosphere. Hard to tell how high but to guess 5,000 ft or less. At that height I would guess it was 300 feet in diameter. It emitted its own light, not a reflection.

Mirage IV - French supersonic bomber

On March 7, 1977, at 08:34pm, Major Ren'e Giraud had engaged the autopilot of a Mirage IV supersonic nuclear capable bomber with Captain Jean Paul Abraham as navigator. They were returning from a night navigation exercise to the Air Force base of Luxeuil and were in the region of Chaumont in the department of Haute Marne, flying at an altitude of 9750 meters and a speed of Mach 0.9, under excellent visibility conditions.

Date: July 1968Time: Approx: 9:00 p.m. (Report received March 19, 2012.) I just happened to use the internet to see about UFO sightings in Goose Bay and learned there have been several over time. I stood less than 40 feet away from a stationary object positioned directly over the roof of a base housing unit, and observed it from all angles for over 5 minutes, until it took off straight up at a high rate of speed when I threw a rock directly at it. Are you interested in my account? This took place in July, 1968. "ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:" I was living in Goose Bay, Labrador in 1968. My dad was stationed at Goose Bay AFB, and worked on Melville Hill, which was a radar installation perched above the base and a few miles away up a winding road. Our housing unit was at the far end of the base, near the end of the runway on the American side of the base. If I turned out of the house left and went to the road, it curved to the right and was one long road that led to the base gym, past rows of standard 2 story base housing for enlisted personnel. In July of 1968, not sure of the exact date, I was coming home from the gym after shooting baskets until closing time, about 9:00 p.m. I walked down the road and as soon as you cross the street in front of the gym and start walking down the road leading to my house, you are passing residences. One thing I noticed, was that not one person was outside, and I never saw a car. It was a perfect night, no clouds at all, and the sky was full of stars with no moon. Clear as clear can be. About halfway down the street was a residence where a friend of mine lived, and I stopped in front of his house and could see a light on in the second story window where he stayed. I was going to call out his name when I noticed something above the edge of the roof. I stepped back for a better view, and backed all the way to the street. These houses had flat roofs, and in the back of the yard was a utility pole with a light on it. I could see between this thing on the roof, the light on the utility pole, so I walked from one side to the other keeping the pole light in view to see any kind of structure supporting this object. The distance between the bottom of the object and the roof was 3 to 5 feet max. As I focused on the size of the object, I could see it was as long as the roof, but I never walked around to the back to see from that side. There was no definition at the base of the object from one side of the roof to the other, just a distinct separation of a few feet from the top of the roof to the bottom of this object and darkness in between, even though I could see the pole light through that space in between. Above it was a different story. The object was sloped, or rounded at the top, which was identical to the center point of the roof, I would say about 10 feet higher, and angling down from the top of the object evenly on either side down to the edges of the roof. There were 3 separate points sloping down from the peak, and they were rounded at the ends, exactly like some starfish you see as you look above them and see their arms extended. I did not notice the object from above as I first tried to see if anything was supporting it by using the light pole in back and going from edge to edge. Stepping into the street was when I focused above the roof and what caught my eye was the slick metallic surface, like the wrapper on a stick of Wrigley chewing gum. No seams, edges, lines, just a totally slick, smooth surface from this peak down to the ends, and which fit perfectly inside the width of the roof. I looked from the object down one way of the street hoping someone was outside so I could get a witness to what I was seeing, but not comprehending. I looked back at the object, still as could be, and looked down the street the other way. Nobody. I was walking toward the front door to knock on it and tell them to come out and look when I saw a fist sized rock, perfect for throwing, sitting by the curb. I picked it up and had the weird sensation that this object knew what I was planning, or that I was being watched. I counted to three and fired that rock square at a point just below the high point of the object. I followed the rock as it was headed right at it and the object went out of view as I saw the rock whizz by the light pole in back, now seen clearly beyond the roof. I looked up in time to see a speck of light shoot straight into the stars and fade out. No sound, no nothing, just out of my view while staring at it as that rock raced toward it. Never saw anything like it before or since, and even though I was 12, I had been around planes enough to know nothing at that time could move that quick from a stationary position with no noise. One of those moments that are distinctly imprinted in your brain, and all the details that went with it. Still recall it like it was yesterday.
