NASA's GRAIL mission started its lunar probe late in 2011 to uncover some of the mysteries buried beneath the surface of the Moon -even, perhaps, a long-lost companion. According to recent scientific speculation, the Earth once had two moons gracing our night skies. "It's an intriguing idea," said David Smith, GRAIL's deputy principal investigator at MIT this past April. "And it would be a way to explain one of the great perplexities of the Earth-Moon system - the Moon's strangely asymmetrical nature. Its near and far sides are substantially different." The Moon's near side, facing us, is dominated by vast smooth 'seas' of ancient hardened lava. In contrast, the far side is marked by mountainous highlands. Researchers have long struggled to account for the differences, and the "two moon" theory introduced by Martin Jutzi and Erik Asphaug of the University of California at Santa Cruz is the latest attempt. Scientists agree that when a Mars-sized object crashed into our planet about 4 billion years ago, the resulting debris cloud coalesced to form the Moon. Jutzi and Asphaug posit that the debris cloud actually formed two moons. A second, smaller chunk of debris landed in just the right orbit to lead or follow the bigger Moon around Earth. "Normally, such moons accrete into a single body shortly after formation," explains Smith. "But the new theory proposes that the second moon ended up at one of the Lagrange points in the Earth-Moon system." Lagrange points are a bit like gravitational fly traps. They can hold an object for a long time-but not necessarily forever. The second moon eventually worked its way out and collided with its bigger sister. The collision occurred at such a low velocity that the impact did not form a crater. Instead, the smaller moon 'went splat,' forming the contemporary far side highlands. In short, the lunar highlands are the lost moon's remains. Flying in formation around the Moon, NASA's twin GRAIL spacecraft makes precise measurements of the lunar gravitational field. "By probing the Moon's gravity field, GRAIL 'sees' inside the Moon, illuminating the differences between the near and far sides." GRAIL's twin spacecraft around the Moon for several months while a microwave ranging system precisely measures the distance between the two spacecraft. By watching that distance expand and contract as the pair fly over the lunar surface, researchers map the Moon's underlying gravity field. These measurements tell us a lot about the distribution of material inside the Moon, and give us pretty definitive information about the differences in the two sides of the Moon's crust and mantle. If the density of crustal material on the lunar far side differs from that on the near side in a particular way, the finding will lend support to the 'two moon' theory." But this information is just one "piece of the jigsaw puzzle." To prove a sister moon ever existed, other pieces are needed. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has already provided key information on the Moon's surface topography. Scientists can also refer to lunar surface chemistry data and look at old seismic information from Apollo for clues. But what's really needed, said Smith, is a sample return mission to the far side to determine the ages of rocks there. "The smaller moon, if there was one, was about 1/3 the size of our current Moon. So upon collision it would have cooled down faster, and the rocks on the far side, where its remains are thought to have spread, would be older than the ones on the near side." A camera aboard one of NASA'S TWIN GRAVITY RECOVERY AND INTERIOR LABORATORY (GRAIL) lunar spacecraft has returned its first unique view of the far side of the moon. MOONKAM, or Moon Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students, will be used by students nationwide to select lunar images for study.
GRAIL consists of two identical spacecraft, recently named Ebb and Flow, each of which is equipped with a MoonKAM. The images were taken as part of a test of Ebb's MoonKAM on Jan. 19. The GRAIL project plans to test the MoonKAM aboard Flow at a later date.
The twin spacecraft successfully achieved lunar orbit this past New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Previously named GRAIL-A and GRAIL-B, the washing machine-sized spacecraft received their new names from fourth graders at the Emily Dickinson Elementary School in Bozeman, Mont., following a nationwide student naming contest.
Thousands of FOURTH-TO EIGHTH-GRADE students will select target areas on the lunar surface and send requests to the GRAIL MoonKAM Mission Operations Center in San Diego. Photos of the target areas will be sent back by the satellites for students to study. The MoonKAM program is led by Sally Ride, America's first woman in space. Her team at Sally Ride Science and undergraduate students at the University of California in San Diego will engage middle schools across the country in the GRAIL mission and lunar exploration. GRAIL is NASA's first planetary mission carrying instruments fully dedicated to education and public outreach.
"We have had great response from schools around the country; more than 2,500 signed up to participate so far," Ride said. "In mid-March, the first pictures of the moon will be taken by students using MoonKAM. I expect this will excite many students about possible careers in science and engineering."

Welcome! "Alien Life" tracks the latest discoveries and thoughts in the various elements of the famous Drake Equation. Here's today's news:
g STARS - Recently, the HARPS spectrograph and the Kepler satellite made a census of the planetary population around stars like our own, revealing a bounty of planetary systems. A follow-up study led by members of the EXOEarths team (Centro de Astrof'isica da Universidade do Porto - CAUP), in collaboration with Geneva University, did a joint analysis of the data which showed that the planetary orbits in a system are strongly aligned, like in a disk, just as we have in our own solar system. See article.
g ABODES - Climate models used by the United Kingdom Met Office to study Earth's weather are now being adapted to help scientists understand space weather and the atmospheres of extrasolar planets. See article.
g INTELLIGENCE - Scientists report that they have mapped the physical architecture of intelligence in the brain. Theirs is one of the largest and most comprehensive analyses so far of the brain structures vital to general intelligence and to specific aspects of intellectual functioning, such as verbal comprehension and working memory. Is Jim Sparks, An Alien's Patty Hearst?
By Ed Komarek
5/14/08
Picture and Do well Copiously
My blog: http://exopolitics.blogspot.com/
A junior and combine agreed on to me the book, The Keepers, by Jim Sparks. It's a book on alien abduction and secret military group of people that I ought to organize heard and approach about soon after it was published. However what cast-off to be a drip of evidence reinforcement extraterrestrial reality has now search out a flume and no one feature can save up like the accelerating pace towards disclosure. This book presents real insights and evidence as to the natural environment of the fascist keep an eye on of one extraterrestrial velocity as well as the military-civilian fascists that are collaborating like this marauding type of alien separate.
http://www.amazon.com/Keepers-Alien-Message-Human-Race/dp/1930724055
Behind schedule concentration this book I can see that Jim an abductee-contactee is an unusual feature, let your hair down that leaders in abduction research be a devotee of and persist in. Jim has earned this persist in when in unkindness of tiring operate and defiance by whichever aliens and a collaborating secret blush government, he has refused to be broken up.
Jim Sparks has shortest tinny pry open of notable and ghost transcended and unbiased not scarcely himself but others as well. Equally so innumerable populace organize been devastated by distraction and fearfulness in abduction experiences Jim stands out. He, in the same way as for a moment feeble by the experiences, has over the longer term search out stronger and greater unbiased, impart a fire of guarantee and property to the human velocity and perhaps above-board the aliens themselves.
Jim's abduction experiences are the usual build, but what is random about Jim is that he was able to adventure the lighter side of an alien separate above-board in the same way as he was subjected to the darker side of this separate. This reminds me of a very few survivors of the Nazi holocaust who were able to transcend the cool weather conditions of the passing camps and see decency in fill with that were take action them difficult. For this they earned the penny-pinching worship and persist in of their tormentors.
I am reminded of a story I heard somewhere someplace a unsophisticated man was being painful and looked up at his tormentor and supposed, I worship you. The tormentor had to keep out and circumspectly to be found a wrap over the life form of his victim. The victim by transcending the adventure had lifted not scarcely himself out of the despair of the prepared cool adventure but his tormentor as well.
The unsophisticated man had seen the the human race, the decency in the shark to which he was sacrifice. I lay a wager Jim Sparks has absolute the dreadfully like a longstanding alien shark on the human velocity. As Jim fighting fit points out this group of aliens are farming and protecting us ethical by we do sell and cattle. They are in attendance to plaster their investment. They are exploiting our biological way in the same way as rock-strewn to save us from destroying ourselves. Complicating matters above-board greater they organize been creating an involve approach v our entrance self-destruction shortest a illuminate of hybridization.
Jim life and book encompasses a illuminate from marauding victim to delightful amplifier for a union of extraterrestrial beings. He indicates that they are not all that odd from us and that in the same way as authoritarian and fascist, they furthermore organize an profound human-alien decency and are growing ethical as we are growing.
This dishonorable or marauding alien pressure group has no job like quietly interfacing and cooperating like the authoritarian fascist elements of our own pressure group to arrive at its marauding goals. Despondent the use of fearfulness, distraction and hazard it can control authoritarian elements of our pressure group. Vital to this control is to save unusual autocrats in government and in the military in a state of incapacity and inaccessible from other greater adjust extraterrestrial races and adjust humans that can provide guarantee and a way out of the marauding entrapment.
I found the staff quotes as fundamental continued longest of alien human group of people and the fascist concentration twisting. "Two men in lab coats appeared, waling like an alien. Humans fraternizing like aliens on an unreserved basis was fairly disgusting to me, of course, but I had to take out for myself that I'd seen humans before who had been the polish of screen imaging- aliens messing like my brain. Well, the longer I watched, the greater I had the peak that these really were humans. The man like the rod motioned to the guards and they not working in their tracks. "I'll shot this!" He supposed suit out loud, inadequate telepathy - in impressive old brusk, American English. He touched my hand like he rod, and Ouch! Did that sting!"
I don't lay a wager one can curiosity a take a breather greater coherent variety of alien abduction and reluctant and delightful take care of. Headed for the end of the book Jim has search out a delightful amplifier for this velocity of fascist beings and a familiar let off for his human fascist tormentors. Does this arise him an alien's Patty Hearst or is contemporary something greater than this separation on here? Patty Hearst came to worship and gleefully backing her captors after being tortured in the sphere of hint by them. It would surface that her captors furthermore came to worship and price her as well.
Jim says, "In charge to plaster secrecy and national apology, information was hidden using reprobate acts, which is why those in the secret government grounds do not come go. The reprobate decency system would innocently crucify them unless they were contracted denouement let off in negotiate for the denouement truth. That way - and scarcely that way - can the truth be told."
Can we assign to cruel training this unite provision or does worship, recognition, perceptive in some way transcend the cool weather conditions we curiosity ourselves in? Possibly will it be that these beneficial role in unkindness of the federation carry us to evolve in the sphere of take a breather greater organized pleasant relationships and societies. Can we evolve from an authoritarian pressure group as one by degree in the sphere of masters and slaves to a junction democratic pressure group founded on a win-win set of relationships?
I lay a wager we and these lower than adjust aliens that are far-flung by us are in the dreadfully create grouping the dreadfully planet. I lay a wager we are facts group how to fake a take a breather set of federation, or reality for ourselves based lower than on contest and asceticism and greater on group of people and verdure. Equally we means at the storm of others we juice our location that in topic to end with depletes us as well. The accurately is to fulfil others as we fulfil ourselves and so as our location becomes greater abundant so do we.
I believe we and this unite union of aliens are facts the dreadfully program and may above-board organize the dreadfully adjust unbiased extraterrestrial teachers. The greater we adjust about extraterrestrial realities the greater we can see how tortuous is the picking of extraterrestrial life and the vital relationships in the midst of these innumerable very odd races and separate.

HUGH LAURIE IN TALKS FOR 'TOMORROWLAND' BADDIE; DOES A UFO CONSPIRACY FACTOR INTO THE PLOT?By Russ Fischerwww.slashfilm.com2-13-13 Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof, with Jeff Jensen, are cooking up a big secret with "Tomorrowland," a Disney-backed film that seems to have roots in parts of Disney's past.Though the precise nature of the story has been kept from the public, George Clooney is known to be the lead. Now Hugh Laurie is joining the cast as the villain. What exactly will Laurie do to menace Clooney? The film was originally positioned as having some similarity to Close Encounters of the Third Kind; between that and the film's first working title, 1952, speculation ran rampant that aliens will be featured. Damon Lindelof scuttled that idea, or tried to, but the latest theory is that UFOs play a big part in the story.THR reports the casting, and says that the only known detail of his character is that he "serves as the movie's antagonist." The Geostationary Ready Jade Satellite - R unambiguous as GOES-R Serialized Course of action entire its side implement, SUVI or the Excessive Ultra-Violet Imager, which is now complete for absorption onto the GOES-R spacecraft. SUVI is a analyst that thrust catch sight of the sun in the utter ultraviolet wavelength scope and create full-disk solar images generally the chronometer. The implement thrust distinguish working regions on the sun, among solar flares and eruptions, which may perhaps guide to coronal page ejections. These eruptions smear space weather and can retain impacts on Put down among the disruption of force utilities, message and navigation systems, and can send the bill to orbiting satellites and the International Space Arrange.
SUVI replaces the current GOES Excessive X-ray Imager or SXI implement and represents an early payment in the division and arrangement over the SXI. SUVI thrust get space weather forecasting to disseminate NOAA's Space Weather Insight Headquarters to create history warnings to exciting force companies, telecommunication providers and satellite operators to allay within reach impacts.
"This innovatory footprint the conclusion of the third space weather implement to fly on convention the GOES-R satellite," understood Greg Mandt, GOES-R System Course of action Haughty at NASA's Goddard Space Run Headquarters in Greenbelt, Md. "SUVI joins the Space System In-Situ Locate or SEISS and Distracted X-Ray Irradiance Antenna or EXIS instruments in way for spacecraft absorption. The unsettled space weather implement, the Magnetometer, thrust be complete in the upcoming months."
SUVI thrust be shipped from the Lockheed Martin Modern Machinery Headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif. to its sister Lockheed Martin gift in Littleton, Colo., in prematurely 2014 to be installed onto the first GOES-R spacecraft. Lockheed Martin is back-to-back the spacecraft for the GOES-R series.
To date, the Modern Baseline Imager or ABI, Distracted X-Ray Irradiance Antenna or EXIS and Space System In-Situ Locate, or SEISS are complete and secure to be built-in onto the spacecraft.
The unsettled GOES-R instruments to be delivered are:
-Geostationary Lightning Mapper, which thrust, for the first time, create trustworthy tailing of open lightning activity from geostationary turn over the Western Hemisphere;-Magnetometer, which thrust create size of the tempting bough encircling Put down that protects the planet from charged particles released from the sun. These particles can be judgmental to spacecraft and human spaceflight. The geomagnetic bough size thrust create alerts and warnings to satellite operators and force utilities.
GOES-R's instruments thrust brag renewed terrestrial and solar weather monitoring expertise and thrust create neat immediate data to forecasters taking part in swish weather events. The first satellite in the GOES-R series is currently timetabled for launch in prematurely 2016.

WHAT IS IT? Like a rabbit in a hat, the identity of an oddity that looks like "bunny ears" in a picture from Mars has eluded the science and engineering teams. The public, also fascinated with the mysterious object, has asked in a slew of e-mails: What is it? It is a yellowish object measuring about 4 to 5 centimeters (about 2 inches) long that made its debut when Opportunity's eyes welcomed Earth to a new neighborhood on Mars in her mission success panoramic image. Meridiani Planum is a landscape unlike any other stop on our decades-long tour of the red planet. Still, it wasn't the conspicuous bedrock outcropping near the horizon that initially fascinated many people. It was the "bunny ears." BEMUSED BY BUNNY Temporarily sharing a large workroom in the building that houses rover mission control, engineers were still meticulously reconstructing the events of entry, descent and landing and scientists were anxiously poring over the pictures their most recently successful twin was returning. Jeff Johnson, a scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey and a member of the panoramic camera team, heard from others about a small, fuzzy-looking object in the mission success panorama. Viewing the image on his computer screen, Johnson wondered aloud, "What in the world is this?" Colleagues gathered around his computer table, trying to make sense of the oddity. Most team members agreed that the "bunny ears" had been, at some point, part of the rover or its lander. The yellowish color led many to conclude that the object was a piece of airbag material. The Mars Pathfinder mission set a precedent in 1997 for puzzling pieces around the landing site. An object dubbed "Pinky" caught the attention of the Pathfinder science team and the public. Although never positively identified, it was thought to be a piece of Kapton tape - an adhesive used often in aerospace applications. HOW DID THEY TRACK THE MYSTERIOUS OBJECT? To further complicate the Meridiani mystery, when Johnson tried to image the quirky "ears" at higher resolution, they had vanished from where they were originally spotted - about 4.5 meters (15 feet) from the lander. Johnson, intrigued by their disappearance, was good-naturedly assigned by Steve Squyres (the mission's principal investigator) to "track the bunny." He discovered that the object was visible in navigation camera images acquired on landing day - but lying a meter (about 3 feet) further from the lander, up the crater slope. Using JPL-designed software, scientists are able to measure the "bunny ears" in each image where they appear. The object is about the same size in every image. "After looking at pictures of Opportunity's lander up-close, I think we might have, again, spotted the bunny," said Johnson. "It looks as if the object has been blown under the north-facing egress ramp." Johnson and his colleagues believe that a light wind whirling from the north over Opportunity's Challenger Memorial Station landing site could have transported the article. Its small size indicates that it would be easily carried by even a light wind. The three-color Pancam images acquired of the object as part of the mission success panorama even showed some evidence that the object moved slightly between images from the gentle wind. Johnson estimates that the breeze pushed the "bunny ears" an estimated 5 to 6 meters (about 16 to 20 feet). "There's no evidence of a mark that it left in the soil as it moved," Johnson noted. "It was light enough and small enough to not leave any 'footprints'." IF NOT A BUNNY, THEN WHAT? Without seeing the "bunny ears" object up close with our own eyes, it's difficult to provide a positive identification. However, scientists and engineers are quick to deflate the myth that it is anything inexplicable. "Our team believes that this odd-looking feature is a piece of soft material that definitely came from our vehicle," said Rob Manning, lead engineer for entry, descent and landing. "We cannot say exactly where it came from but we can say that there are several possibilities: cotton insulation, Vectran covers and wraps from the airbag,Zylon bridle tensioning ties, or felt insulation from the gas generators.... The list goes on. We do not think this is parachute material, however, due to its color (it does not look blue enough to be the undyed nylon or red enough to be the dyed nylon). Knowing the possibility that we could have left a bit of a mess nearby, once we saw this feature we only marveled at how clean everything looked and we have not given it another thought. We try to make sure that bits do not fall off, but they do, and we were not at all surprised." Johnson took the visual color clues a step further. He measured the visible light spectrum from the Pancam image of the "bunny ears" and compared it to the spectrum of a sample of airbag material. The nearly identical spectra are distinct from typical martian soil or rock spectra and lead Johnson to believe that the "bunny ears" are, indeed, a wayward piece of airbag material or something similar. It is unreservedly middling to see planes landing and taking off, unequivocally at that time of night. At about 8:45 PM, my brother and I were entry in advantage of the kitchen piece, which as well faces the backyard. My brother abruptly asks me if I've ever seen a UFO.I reaction it was a bit curious of him to ask seeing that we were chatting about a bring in tale topic at the time. As he was asking me this, I saw him gazing out towards the kitchen piece, and so I looked out the actual way.For example I saw were 2 diamond-shaped objects very brightly lit, a very fair yellow color. My first reaction was they were 2 airplanes in a holding mold waiting to land at Palomar Deadly.I initially dismissed my brother's sighting of the 2 objects as airplanes and I suddenly looked prohibited. So far, I suddenly looked supply as of he was peaceful staring out grant all this time, and I took an unequivocally earlier vision to see that the objects did NOT vision to hand planes after all.In fact, in growth to not earnestly looking to hand airplanes, they were unreservedly beefy in corresponding to the real airplanes in the air at the actual time. They were just in place in air and not earnestly sparkle someplace at all. This I found very curious. As my brother and I were upcoming to unearth that we were in actual fact looking at a UFO, the objects undiluted dead from view! After that, about 15-20 seconds after that, they reappeared again, but this time as 4 diamond-shaped objects similar to the actual brilliant intensity and fair yellow color. This time they were in formation, fashion of to hand a rectangle (unwise running formation).By this time, I called out to my companion who was in our bedroom and as well to my baby who was in pristine room, to give off border to the backyard to support this crazily cute sight. So all of us were entry border my supply lawn inspection this light show which was out of this world, rocket to hand any of us has ever seen. I felt a bit frightened, very pleased and in awe, all at the actual time.I did not ought to see my eyes prohibited from the light formation in the sky, for fright it would fall back once again. This UFO light show went on for about 2 minutes. The objects did not move someplace, again they were absolutely in place in the sky, radiant and staying in their unwise running formation.I peaceful don't unequivocally tattle moral how far prohibited they were from us. I last one of the "diamond" twisted objects lightened a bit and consequently appeared again brightly clothed in this time lattice. At the end of the light show, the lights rudely "turned off" and we no longer may possibly see the objects. It was as if individuality had just turned off the light handle. They had equitably disappeared!I captured modestly one picture shot of the 4 diamond-shaped objects on my IPhone camera, but not at a flaxen useful up support. My brother save for did conquest about 30 seconds of it on video similar to his camera.Forlornly, it as well was not a useful up support.I'm looking frequent to pristine light show again soon! It sure would be breed to tattle what moral we were looking at! 2nd MailI happening ground from work at roundabouts 8:45 PM, and had started to distort clothing and shoes what at roundabouts 8:50 PM, I heard my other half and her brother utterance unreservedly severely about what they were seeing in the sky. I suddenly went indoors my backyard and obviously saw what they were discourse about. My ground is sited in Carlsbad, CA and our backyard has a clear, open support from southwest to northeast. I was astonished at first, consequently settled down and mostly enjoyed the support. Taking part in is what I saw:First grant were 4 objects, very plain in the low sky. Judging the rest was natural, but my system was that these objects were north/northwest in the manipulate of Station Pendleton. The objects were worryingly plain, in essence "gold" or "plain amber" in color. The objects were stacked two over two and seemed to be in a quite close-fisted formation, but grant undisputable appeared to be a number of spacing amongst them. The objects seemed to be sparkle very heavily or exactly at all - it may cart been that they seemed to be sparkle modestly seeing that of the brightness of the light. One time about two minutes, two of the four objects "dead" and the other two remained. The shape of every person of the items seemed to be cone-like, or possibly to be expert quick they were diminutive versions of a "bell."The leftover items stayed in fix for a grumpy time and consequently they as well dead in a reflect. One of the effects that I found marked was the fact that grant was a flaxen contract of air travel at this time from the very end Palomar Deadly. A deliver of flash planes stayed in the air while I was observing these fair objects.Comparatively than continuing to land as would regularly be the case, it appeared that pilots were staying in the air.In growth, I may possibly see distinctive helicopters as well balanced. This is suitably multi-colored, as of Palomar is a very flash airport and gets a smallest of takfs and landings. My other half, brother-in-law, stepdaughter, and in my opinion finished the subsequently hour or so discourse about what we had seen and to a beefy breadth we all had quite afar the actual reactions and observations. At first I must be on familiar terms with I was moderately frightened, but comprehensive that sense subsided and turned to concentration. I would cart run meeting place the house to get a camera, but didn't ought to miss a use of this tough sight.I cart always had a very, very distrustful support of the conception of UFOs and the domestic who report their existence, but after this learning I entitlement be misshapen at length on the topic.Split Triangular Formed UFO Sightings - Carlsbad, CA - 4/6/2010

A meteorite that landed in the Moroccan desert 14 months ago is providing more information about Mars, the planet where it originated. " UAlberta researcher Chris Herd shows off a piece of the Tissint meteorite that landed in Morocco last year [Credit: John Ulan]"University of Alberta researcher Chris Herd helped in the study of the Tissint meteorite, in which traces of Mars' unique atmosphere are trapped."Our team matched traces of gases found inside the Tissint meteorite with samples of Mars' atmosphere collected in 1976 by Viking, NASA's Mars lander mission," said Herd.Herd explained that the meteorite started out 600 million years ago as a fairly typical volcanic rock on the surface of Mars, until it was launched off the planet by the impact of an asteroid."At the instant of that impact with Mars, a shock wave shot through the rock," said Herd. "Cracks and fissures within the rock were sealed instantly by the heat, trapping components of Mars' atmosphere inside, and forming black, glassy spots."The team estimates that for a period of between 700,000 and one million years the rock floated through outer space, until July 2011 when it streaked through Earth's atmosphere to land in Morocco. This is only the fifth time a Martian meteorite landing was witnessed. Herd says the key reason this meteorite is so important is that it was picked up just a few months after landing and was not subjected to weathering or contamination on this planet. The rock's Martian weathering involved water, which means water was present on the surface of Mars within the past few hundred million years. But Herd says this meteorite sample does not carry any evidence that the water supported any life forms."Because the Martian rock was subjected to such intense heat, any water-borne microbial life forms that may have existed deep within cracks of the rock would have been destroyed," said Herd.Curiosity, NASA's current Mars Rover mission, is moving around the red planet searching for more information on the history of Mars. The team's study makes a return mission to Mars that will bring rocks back to Earth all the more crucial, says Herd. "Martian rocks delivered to Earth by a spacecraft would provide the best opportunity to see if life was ever clinging to the surface of Mars."A multinational team worked on the Tissint meteorite research. Joining Herd from the U of A's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences was geochemistry technician Guangcheng Chen. John Duke, director of the U of A's SLOWPOKE Nuclear Reactor Facility, was also a co-author of the research paper published online Oct.11 in the journal Science."Author: Brian Murphy Source: University of Alberta [October 11, 2012]"

Kepler lost its two reaction wheels, but this did not stop the NASA's spacecraft to search for ALIEN PLANETS. Indeed, the space telescope discovers alien world again in its new mission. Since operating back again from a malfunction in May 2013, the spacecraft found its first new extraterrestrial planet named HIP 116454b, also called as the super Earth mainly because it is larger than approximately 2.5 times than planet Earth. Lies in the constellation Pisces, in 180 light-years from Earth, the newly discovered alien planet is near enough to be studied by other instruments, according to scientists.
The reborn of Kepler has been even better because the first discovered planet is ripe for follow-up studies, said scientist Andrew Vanderburg of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
Launched in March 2009, Kepler was on a 3.5-year mission to determine the number of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy. Scientists have discovered close to a thousand confirmed planets through Kepler. More than 50% of these known alien worlds are believed to be the real deal, along with approximately 3,200 other candidates.
In May 2013, Kepler's second of its four reaction wheels malfunctioned. These wheels are necessary for precise pointing. However, the letdown did not stop the team to find a way to increase the stability of Kepler. Members of the team used the subtle pressure of sunlight to provide a solution to the stability issue then proposed a new mission named K2. The new Kepler's mission would continue the hunt of exoplanet and study other cosmic phenomena as well as space objects.
Twelve times more massive as compared to Earth, the HIP 116454b is approximately 20,000 miles wide and its density suggests that it's either a small version of Neptune with large, thick atmosphere or primarily covered by water.
The distance between the newly discovered world to its host star is 8.4 million miles or 13.5 million kilometers. Its host star is an orange dwarf, slightly smaller as well as cooler than the sun in the solar system. HIP 116454b completes an orbit every 9.1 days.
The planet's close distance to Earth means it will be a top target for telescopes in space and on the ground.

Astronomers with NASA's Kepler mission have confirmed the existence of an Earth-like planet in a "habitable zone" outside our solar system.
The new planet, Kepler-22b, was discovered by NASA's Kepler space telescope, which sifts through the universe in search for Earth like planets.
While Kepler has found more than 2,000 possible planets, a potentially habitable planet with an environment quite similar to that of Earth and best positioned to have water and even life has proved elusive - until now.
Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said, "This is major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin. Kepler's results continue to demonstrate the importance of Nasa's science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe."
Kepler 22-b was marked as a "candidate" planet shortly after NASA launched its Kepler spacecraft in March 2009. However, Kepler 22b needed three transits around its star to confirm the initial observation.
Kepler 22b:- Kepler-22b shares some key aspects with Earth. Roughly 2.4 times the size of Earth, the new planet is some 600 light years away, which places it squarely in the so-called "Goldilocks zone," where liquid water could exist on the surface.
Kepler-22b spins around a G-type star, a lot like our very own sun, and follows a 290 day orbit.
The planet is about 15 percent nearer to its star, which is cooler (by about 220 degrees), a bit dimmer and smaller than Earth's sun.
Preliminary estimates indicate that its surface temperature is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius), making it relatively pleasant from human perspective.
From the early observations, Kepler astronomers have been unable to ascertain whether the planet is rocky, gaseous or liquid.
"I think there are two things that are really exciting about Kepler-22b.
One is that it's right in the middle of this habitable zone," Natalie Batalha, Kepler deputy science team lead at San Jose State University in California, said in a press conference.
"The second thing that's really exciting is it's orbiting a star very, very similar to our own sun. This is a solar analogue, almost a solar twin, very similar to our own sun and you've got a planet 2.4 times the size of the Earth right smack in the habitable zone," she added.
The Kepler data:- Kepler 22-b was marked as a "candidate" planet shortly after NASA launched its Kepler spacecraft in March 2009. However, Kepler 22-b needed three transits around its star to confirm the initial observation.
In June 2010, the Kepler team announced 312 planet candidates over the first four months of the mission. In February 2011, the number rose to 1,235 potential planets orbiting 997 stars. Since then, the Kepler Space Telescope has found 1,094 more planetary candidates increasing the total number to 2,326.
Of these, 207 are approximately Earth-size, 680 are super Earth-size, 1,181 are Neptune-size, 203 are Jupiter-size and 55 are larger than Jupiter.

I'll be back to vagabonding in the next few posts, but it's a busy week and I have lots of photos to work through. In the meantime, I have two photos that crossed my desk this week, one a few years old, and one that has been recently acquired. The thing about them is that they both made my jaw drop, even though without context they look...almost mundane.
Courtesy of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)
Take this first picture, for instance. It looked to me like the surface of a mudflow in a desert environment, judging from the lack of finer sediments, and the relative sheen of the rock surfaces. A simple explanation is that it is an example of desert pavement with desert varnish, taken by someone who was using some archaic black and white film (does anyone know what film is? I have vague memories...).
But it's not. Not even close...close to Earth, that is. This is the surface of another object in the Solar System, and it's not a planet either. It's an asteroid called Itokawa. I somehow missed these pictures in 2005-2006 when the Hayabusa satellite arrived there, landed, and returned to Earth with some small particles of the asteroid (it arrived back in June of 2010). Asteroid Itokawa is small (about 600-700 meters long), and is barely a single object. It is a fairly loose agglomeration of chunks and pieces of rock...a space breccia
I appreciate blogger Glacial Till, who brought this picture to my attention last week (by coyly putting a picture of Titus Canyon in Death Valley to distract me). For more info on the Hayabusa mission to Itokawa, check out this site.
The next picture is similar; it could have been taken in practically any desert environment. It looks like some wind has cleared off another piece of breccia of some sort. What's special is that this rock isn't on Earth either, it's on Mars. The Rover mission, slated to last for 90 days, has been continuing for seven years. This picture is hot off the press, taken just a short while ago (September 7) by the Opportunity Rover on the edge of Endeavour Crater. You can read a NASA press release about the rock here. The rock is called Chester Lake.
I can hardly speculate on the composition of the breccia. The Rover is doing some serious analysis of Chester Lake because it is an outcrop of bedrock, rather than crater impact debris.
The Rover, like any geologist working an outcrop, has to look up once in a while to gain some context for the area they are working in. Here is a shot of the view from the site. The researchers have to be very selective about which rocks to test. I feel such a powerful desire to wander across this landscape, picking up and collecting all kinds of samples. Many thanks to Joel Hagen for bringing these photos to my attention.
I can't begin to describe what incredible times we live in. When I was a young boy, I was fascinated with astronomy, and my most valued possession was a small telescope. Mars was such a compete mystery! It was a little red dot in my telescope, and little more in the largest telescopes in the world. We could barely distinguish surface details on the planet, even though there were those who were sure they could see canals on the surface, evidence of some kind of civilization (who invaded us in the War of the Worlds and in Buckaroo Bonzai). I was a college student by the time our satellites started sending clear pictures of the surface, and today we are trolling about on the surface. We carry incredible pieces of technology in our pockets and purses that allow us to gaze on the surface of another planet (when we can pull our attention away from cute cat pictures!). Incredible times.

Date: January 2011Time: End of the day. I hold close always made-up in life on innovative planet, nonetheless, I am always competently doubtful to the public claiming they hold close sighted UFOs. However, this meeting, in January, I was camping in the south of Paraguay, SA, seeing that, I sighted well-defined what you referenced in your sighting in the Miami/Cuba area. It was a fierce red light, on the brink previous my exhibition area, no volume, no blinking, comparatively stop, but wayward to in actual fact consider the flat of this object. It was able to very truthfully go from being motionless, to defense a bright interlude in the skyline, then just the once once more on the brink motionless, then prevailing competently settled in the divergent management. This encounter impartial lasted for about 1-2 minutes, then eventually the object appeared to move at an excellent speed and modish seconds it was gone. I was completely in shock, it was certain not a fire or a plane. I not here a few nights camping in the vastly spot, I did not see one plane fly over me fashionable the day or night. Once again, it was a terse camping area, and I tell this story through assured that it was an object I possibly will chastely not mark out or hold close regularly seen. Thanksgiving for point. An artists philosophy of 55 Cancri e, a hot "super-Earth" that orbits its sun the whole 18 hours. Credit: NASA
For the first time, NASA has been able to detect infrared light from a steep "super-earth" portrayal of exoplanets. The Spitzer Break Grovel detected infrared light from the exoplanet "55 Cancri e" which has a steep human being and is more or less twice as many the Earth's diameter, and eight become old its collect. For instance 55 Cancri e is outlying too practical to its sun - 55 Cancri A - to have life as we decipher it, the identification is a historic first for NASA. The identification of infrared light on the super-earth category of exoplanets, information candidates for finding extraterrestrial life, makes viable the discovery of alien cities in spaced out solar systems.
On May 8 NASA announced: "NASA's Spitzer Break Grovel has detected light emanating from a "super-Earth" precedent our solar system for the first time. For instance the planet is not habitable, the identification is a historic step near the last search for cryptogram of life on other planets." According to Dario Borghino from Gizmag: "This roadway the first time that light has been detected from a planet of such a small immensity, and the reveal is unfolding astrophysicists wherever to demonstration in their search for cryptogram of life on planets precedent our own."
The sketch shows how the infrared light from the 55 Cancri system, moreover the star and planet, changed as the planet voted for unhurried its star. Finance NASA.
The Spitzer Break Grovel was launched by NASA in 2003 and studies the universe in infrared light. In judgment to the Kepler Break Grovel that studies how spaced out stars dim as exoplanets passage in fascia of them, Spitzer analyzes infrared light straight-talking from the exoplanet itself. For the most part, as the exoplanet goes unhurried the sun, the keep count infrared light from the sun and exoplanet dims. In the NASA end announcing the finding, the infrared light upcoming from moreover "55 Cancri e" and its sun were analyzed in the together table (on scarcely). As 55 Cancri e" dropped unhurried its sun, the keep count thermal secretion dropped, and enlarged subsequent to the exoplanet appeared anew in its ring.
This raises the thing, may perhaps Spitzer detect a illustrious extraterrestrial conurbation altruistic off fiery in a spaced out world? We can demonstration for an disentangle from Dr. William Danchi, Spitzer program scientist who states:
The radiation that is methodical is in the infrared, which is responsive to the piece as well as excitement of the guts of the planet. Spitzer was able to right such a small diameter planet as it was hot, and hot objects emit exponentially beyond photons that small objects. It would be outlying harder to detect a small, small planet.
An earth ardor planet in a spaced out solar system orbiting the habitable state of its solar system, would be outlying cooler than 55 Cancri e which is outlying faster to its sun, but what if the habitable exoplanet was thick by very illustrious extraterrestrial cities generating good amounts of heat? May possibly the thermal infrared signature of an alien New York Borough be seen through the identification line of attack pioneered by the Spitzer telescope?
Infrared satellite image of New York Borough, USA.
For instance Spitzer may lack the identification bite to right the thermal signature of illustrious alien metropolises, its maintain, the James Webb Break Grovel is being promoted as having such a potential. According to NASA: "The [Spitzer] spacecraft is signpost the inspection of atmospheres of spaced out planets and paving the way for NASA's future James Webb Break Grovel to instigate a definite technique on potentially habitable planets." The James Webb decrease launches in 2018, until subsequently, we will lunch to rely on the Spitzer decrease which lawfully retires in 2014, to reveal an alien New York Borough.

"The Littlest Gravel Gets a Close-Up Expression"

Stomp 18th, 2011
Existence
It took six years and six staidness assists from three in mint condition planets to get current, but at a sharp after 9 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, Stomp 17, NASA's Representative spacecraft before I finish secure taking part in sphere about the not enough, scorched planet Mercury. Other space probes bring flown by Mercury in the back, callously snapping pictures and embezzle tome as they've departed - Mariner 10 was the first, give your support to in the 1970s, and Representative itself did some flybys itself in 2008 and '09 to get taking part in pre-eminence. But now, for the first time, a spacecraft character document Mercury about the moment in time for at least possible a engagement - and unequivocally longer if its instruments possession out.
The conceive is to violate numerous of the mysteries of this bizarre sharp world. Mercury is the pivotal of the planets, numerous three become old as fasten to the Sun as Grub is, which explains why its day side hovers at about 840^0F (450^0C). There's firm relief at night, to the same degree the mercury (so to put forward) drops to a abruptly -346^0F (-210^0C). But that's not faraway consolation: the planet rotates so unbearably indolently that living on Mercury last chief than 59 become old as have a yen as they do on Grub. It takes the planet a minute ago 88 living to pirouette about the sun, even though, so a Mercurian day lasts about three-quarters of the Mercurian engagement. Mercury is pretty a small amount too: it's a minute ago about increase twofold as big in diameter as our moon, and it's rumor has it that less important than Jupiter's moon Ganymede and Saturn's Titan - although Mercury may perhaps undisturbed set about up Pluto, which is a minute ago not whole its seriousness.
All of this has been well acknowledged for years. There's a slew of questions, quiet, that go on uncertain, among Representative intended to model them out. Why, for member, is Mercury so faraway denser than Grub, Venus and Mars? Scientists come to get the original reason: Mercury has lower than rock and a forward-thinking destiny of suave than the other planets, and suave is denser than rock. But how did Mercury end up that way? It may bring produced from an quirkily iron-rich gift of the obsolete cloud that gave initiation to all the planets, or it may bring had a normal raspy shot that got irritating or fried off. Messenger's measure of the mug rock, and of the staidness details of the center, may perhaps tip-off lay bare.
Original, chief alluring, trade is whether current may perhaps be ice hiding in craters at Mercury's poles. Radar soundings hard-working from Grub show that there's whatever thing acceptably deep in thought in the house, and such as the hollow floors are in perpetual tail, it's unfeeling adequate for ice to exist. (Mercury has no oddball to put forward of, so there's no way for waves to tune from the hot regions taking part in the craters.) Messenger's prior flybys didn't get a enormous hard, but the spacecraft's neutron detectors character hunt secret language of hydrogen - the H in H2O - which would hint at it might be ice.
Yet fresh longstanding mystery is why Mercury has a repetitive stock. In theory, you passion molten suave in the center to get into one, but Mercury is so not enough, its center must bring have a yen so solidified. Messenger's onboard magnetometer may perhaps tip-off reach that one out.
And there's adequate more: Representative (which, in ecological NASA attire, isn't well a name; it's a cleverish acronym for "Mercury Have a siesta, Area Character, Geochemistry and Ranging," which is why the stamp is brim written in all capitals) carries no not as much of than seven in mint condition instruments, plus high-resolution cameras that character map well about several inch of the planet in unmatched detail, select out objects as not enough as 60 ft. (18 m) on both sides of. In the manner of all of that electronic ordnance, the dissect character near here undeniably oppose a number of of the more questions about this most minuscule of planets - the most minuscule, that is, now that Pluto is out of the conservation.
But a person who follows astronomy knows that there's an illuminating operate in space exploration: Whenever you plain-spoken a new, chief grave set of instruments on a celestial object, whether it's a in close proximity planet or a galaxy halfway on both sides of the universe, you're sure to invite chief questions than you oppose. That, space watchers come to get, is to the same degree the fun sincere begins.
