Have you ever heard of Eric Beckjord? He is or was the director of a group who investigated Sasquatch and other anomalous phenomena. I talked with him on the phone once and got into a semi-argument about my contention that I could find a Bigfoot using my psychic abilities. This was back in 1982. He challenged me to meet him at a coffee house in Seattle and sit down, have coffee and talk about it. I was surprised when I saw him--he is a huge Swede, blond bigfoot. Anyway to make a long story short I picked a spot intuitively out in the Weyerhaser forests near Sasquatch Park B.C. We stayed a couple days and decided to give it up due to excessive rain. The upshot of this story is that I got a phone call from Beckjord about a week or so later and a group that monitors Bigfoot activity and reports in Washington reported that someone reported spotting a bigfoot right in the area where I took him to explore. I always felt an empathic aura with this much maligned being.
I told Nahu that Erik and I had corresponded a few times; Eric liked the fact I took the paranormal Bigfoot idea seriously, but he argued with me on the particulars. One time he refused to join a Yahoo group I had going at the time -- I think it was called Maverick Bigfoot Research or something -- because we didn't go far enough!
As most Bigfoot and cryptid/o researchers know, Eric had quite the reputation for being argumentative. But I had no negative interactions with him, even when he'd shoot off an email to me that I was "wrong" -- he never attacked me in public or spread lies. Though I realize he did so in regards to others. Like many other Fortean researchers, whether they're writing about UFOs, Bigfoot, ghosts,... Beckjord was a "troublemaker" and his theories, as well as his style, were not presented in the best way. And yet there is a there there. With so much of this stuff it's easy to throw that messy baby out with the bathwater.
Nahu commented further:
He seemed like such a huge bear of a man. Aries, as I recall, like to challenge. We had a number of outright disagreements. But once out in the woods, he seemed like he was in his element. What his problem was with me, he resented the idea that I had the arrogance to think I could attract a bigfoot the first time out when he had been out on expeditions looking for him for five years and hadn't seem more than a glimpse of him. His interest in me was primarily a challenge and only secondarily curiosity, I think. At that time, I presented my theory to him my that Bigfoot was an intrad-dimensional being recurring at certain cyclic points from the collective unconscious, so to speak, in attunement to an individual's vibration. Like the white buffalo story. Native Americans looked upon bigfoot as a medicine--I agree--he definitely had the ability to scare the sickness right out of someone, almost like the bogey man in caucasian mythology.

Oh, by the way, I believe the year was 1981 during the winter season. I had a couple distinct times I felt I was quite close to contacting this intra-dimensional being, once while in the woods of Sasquatch Park while camping, and another time in a wooded area near Escondido, California. While living in Oakridge, Oregon when is pretty primitve, heavily wooded and quite near an area as I recall named Blue Springs, where Sasquatch was often seen I felt his presence also. I never felt any negative energy, just calm, as though I was close to a very ancient, spiritual fount. I could sense elements of my own subconscious fears holding a face-to-face off from happening. Although to be honest, I was never really afraid of this being.
On another note,I did feel some extremely strange vibrations while out in the West Virginia hills near where the Silver Bridge collapsed that gave me the willies, though.

Loren Coleman chases legendary beasts, from the Loch Ness Monster to the Abominable Snowman to Bigfoot, that science has never been able to verify but that make even skeptics wonder: What if?

To believers, doubters, even skeptics, Bigfoot makes a big impression. The replica 8 1/2 - foot hairy hominoid -- crafted from the fur of musk oxen and buffalo, a hulking presence on the porch of a brown-and-yellow home in Portland, Maine -- scares the bejesus out of the UPS man. Still, it's right at home here on the doorstep of a man who has spent a lifetime investigating mysterious animal sightings. "I don't particularly feel like a strange person," Loren Coleman says. "It's the subject I study that's strange."
He is a leading figure in the world of cryptozoology, a field whose legitimacy is disputed. Coleman has trekked to 49 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, and Scotland, gathering physical evidence and eyewitness accounts of Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman, the Loch Ness Monster, Mothman, thunderbirds, and other legendary beasts not verified by conventional science but storied enough to make us wonder: What if?
"Eighty percent of all the accounts that come to me are misidentifications, are mundane animals - a few fakes, a few hoaxes," Coleman acknowledges. "But it's that 20 percent of the core unknowns that keep me going." And he's not chasing after unicorns. Coleman cites a pantheon of animals once deemed hypothetical but since authenticated: mountain gorillas, giant pandas, okapis, coelacanths, ivory-billed woodpeckers.
The rumored animals -- so-called cryptids -- may be totally unknown or rediscovered species thought to have been extinct. Initial accounts of such animals "are always fantastic," he says. "The early reports of mountain gorillas said that they all stood upright, that they squeezed to death native women and attacked hunters."
Coleman made the news late last year when he, along with a subsidiary of the toy giant Hasbro, announced plans for a 1 million bounty for evidence that would lead to the live, safe capture of Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman, or the Loch Ness Monster. (The bounty was quickly rescinded amid concerns it would spark a frenzy and cause injury to the hunters and the hunted.)
A twice-divorced single dad, Coleman shares his four-bedroom home that doubles as the International Cryptozoology Museum (visits by appointment) with two sons, 16 and 20, and two chirpy parakeets. His day job is dissecting human behavior -- specifically, youth suicide. Coleman, who has a master's degree in social work, is a consultant to the Maine Youth Suicide Program. "Suicide is the ultimate mystery," he says. "And I'm very interested in mysteries."
The oldest of four children of a firefighter and a homemaker, Coleman grew up in Decatur, Illinois. He recalls being mesmerized at age 12 by the Japanese flick Half Human, about a huge, hairy, manlike mammal reputed to live in the Himalayas. If the allure of the Abominable Snowman, or Yeti, captured Coleman as a boy, it has yet to let him go. "So I'm 58," he says. "I feel, sometimes, like I'm 8 or 18."
"It's really about passion and patience," Coleman says of cryptozoology. Says Sue O'Halloran, a colleague at the youth suicide program: "We kind of joke when we're driving north that he should keep his eyes peeled in case something should run across the road."
Along the way from 8 to 58, Coleman became a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, a vegetarian, and a baseball nut. Today, one can almost see a little of the Yeti in his pale-blue eyes, framed by white hair and beard. But he is dead serious about his pursuit of phantom creatures and holds that cryptozoology is another branch of natural history, akin to anthropology or biology, even though there are those who consider it fringe science. "Among monster hunters, Loren's one of the more reputable," says Benjamin Radford, managing editor of Skeptical Inquirer magazine. "But I'm not convinced that what cryptozoologists seek is actually out there."
Coleman, however, estimates he has taken 8,300 credible eyewitness reports of encounters with hypothetical animals. He keeps a smattering of evidence at his house-cum-museum -- for example, fur and fecal material found in the vicinity of Bigfoot and Yeti sightings. "I'm really interested in measurable, tangible, scientific evidence," Coleman says. "We need DNA."
His edge-of-reality museum sits on an ordinary street and displays his quirky humor as much as his life's work. Taxidermy lines the walls, and bookshelves and bins are crammed with oddities, including 150 or so Bigfoot or Sasquatch plaster footprint casts, a variety of real and reproduction skulls like "Gigantopithecus," monster action figures, and souvenir kitsch.
Although none of his work is making him rich, Coleman has written or co-written 26 books, including the popular Mysterious America and Bigfoot! The True Story of Apes in America. He also publishes a blog at cryptomundo.com. He has consulted on TV shows, among them NBC's Unsolved Mysteries, and the Hollywood movie The Mothman Prophecies.
Though he has yet to find Bigfoot, delusional fans have had no problem hunting Coleman down. "They thought I was a crackpot and as potentially unbalanced as they were," he says, only half-jokingly.
Has Coleman himself ever seen something in the wild he couldn't explain? "Not that I'm comfortable saying was definitely a cryptid," he replies, then reluctantly admits he saw a black pantherlike creature while driving in Anna, Illinois, one night in 1969.
As for Bigfoot and Yeti, Coleman believes they are likely to be confirmed as real, while the evidence for Nessie is more elusive. Once an animal is demystified, it becomes the province of traditional science, but until then, Coleman will continue his hunt. "By pursuing something like Yeti," he says, "we begin to understand the Abominable Snowman in all of us."

The Freeman video does advance an aspect that is not discrete in the Patterson-Gimlim film...the fortune that these creatures are paranormal. I adjust sooner than Thom Powell in his ordeal that this Bigfoot was not clear at points in the video in which it call for confine been seen. This coincides sooner than other reports I confine in use as well as my category encounter in 1981. When Loren Coleman, billed as "America's foremost cryptozoologist," strode into New Haven's Institute Library, he had to wade through a sell-out crowd, probably a first for the library's "Amateur Hour" series.
Why was it standing-room-only? Bigfoot.
Everybody wants to know everything there is to know about that legendary cryptid.
Perhaps you're wondering: what is a cryptozoologist? And what's a cryptid?
Coleman, whose gray beard and calm, scientific demeanor indicate he is not a nut job, defined cryptozoology near the beginning of his presentation last Tuesday.
"It is the study of hidden or unknown animals," he said. "Animals that have not yet been verified as a species."
"What bothers me," he added, "is that the media often defines it as the study of animals that don't exist or just the study of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster."
Both of those are cryptids, which are yet-to-be-found animals.
Coleman stated at the outset: "I am a skeptic." He demands to see plenty of hard evidence before believing any of the many claims of creature sighters.
"I try to interview the witness first," he told us. "I try to understand the human element. The creature is important to me. But I'm never blown away by a piece of evidence. I always look for the motive."
For instance, he investigated the claim by a veterinarian in Texas she had discovered a being that was "part human, part primitive."
"MY STANDARD IS: NO DATA, NO DISCOVERY," COLEMAN SAID. "AND WHY IS SHE SAYING RIDICULOUS THINGS LIKE 'THESE ARE ANGELS FROM HEAVEN'?"
Joshua Foer, the New Haven-based writer who conducted the public interview of Coleman at the library, noted Coleman was asked to solve the riddle of "the Montauk monster," a hideous carcass that washed up on the shore of Long Island.
"I named it," Coleman said proudly. "I like alliteration."
After examining the decaying skull, Coleman concluded, "This was a raccoon in second-stage decomposition."
Coleman said that for every 100 cases of new animal claims, about 80 of them are mistaken identity, one is a hoax and the other 19 are unknown.
"But the media goes crazy about the hoaxes," he noted.
Coleman said Bigfoot hoaxers are "really evil people."
"Let's talk about Bigfoot," Foer said, and Coleman was off and running.
He noted that when he surveys people who come to his International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Me. (the world's only cryptozoology museum), "nine out of 10 are interested in Bigfoot."
Coleman thinks he knows the reason: "Of all the cryptids, Bigfoot is the one that looks the most like us."
Coleman isn't about to declare Bigfoot is real but he did say, "I think there is something going on out there."
He said the most "compelling" evidence is the Patterson-Gimlin footage of a hairy figure shot Oct. 20, 1967, in Bluff Creek, Calif. "You can see the mammary glands," he noted. "And muscle contractions."
Coleman added: "You see horses reacting to the creature. You have film, you have footprints. We have to be careful about putting all of our eggs in a basket. But if you look at it now, it's the gold standard of all Bigfoot films."
Coleman said we needn't look for Bigfoot in populated regions such as Connecticut. But he noted: "You've got the melon heads in Shelton! Groups of unknown creatures in the woods with giant heads. They're folk art."
Coleman said, "I've been at this 53 years" and yet cryptozoology is still often dismissed as pseudo science. "I've long ago given up my defensiveness."
He got interested in the field when he was a kid. The date was March 20, 1960. He saw a Japanese documentary, "Half Human," about the Yeti (the Abominable Snowman).
"My teachers told me, 'They don't exist, go back to your studies.' So I became very well-known in the Decatur (Illinois) Public Library. I was given three or four books on the subject. I started devouring them."
When a guy at the Institute Library asked Coleman about the Loch Ness monster, he replied, "There's the least amount of evidence and the most publicity."
Coleman did an expedition there in 1999 but alas, no "Nessie."
He took his son with him. When his boy got back and told his teacher he had spent his summer "looking for the Loch Ness monster," the teacher told Coleman, "I think your son is delusional. You need to come down here for counseling." - NHRegister

"In discussing the recent DNA news, I quoted John Hawks, the Wisconsin anthropologist, in my agreeing with his notion that "no data, no discovery" is the stance to take. My attribution to Hawks was absence from the article.
I said that quotes supposedly from the researcher in Texas, saying ridiculous things like "These are angels from heaven," were released on Facebook, and that does not help the cause of serious research on Bigfoot. Those remarks were denied later as having been said by the Texas individual. The article does not make it clear I was talking about the leakage and not the exacting quotations."

Knapp asked her about her insistence that those she's discussed her research with sign disclosure statements. (Knapp himself signed one.) Ketchum explained that it's important to keep the data as uncontaminated as possible.
Then there's the infamous "peer reviewed" journal citation that gives any researcher the cred they need to be accepted in mainstream science and academia. It's a crazy loop: you have to be accepted by the very types of individuals who think you're nuts to be doing this kind of research in the first place, so you're not going to be accepted. Not having been accepted, your research is nothing. If her research isn't accepted into an accepted scientific journal, she's out. So is the star of this thing: Bigfoot.
So, given all this, why is Dr. Melba Ketchum --despite her possible missteps involving communication or style -- being treated badly by some in cryptozoology?
One possible answer to that is the uneasiness among some researchers that Bigfoot might be human, or far more human like, than those researchers have presumed. Some Bigfoot researchers have no problem with promoting a kill -- "for science" they tell us -- or thinking of Bigfoot as a big ape. Or some kind of animal. (Forgetting that we, too are animals.) Bigfoot is intelligent, very cool, what a find! but in the end, "just" an animal.
Many witnesses who've encountered Bigfoot speak of the eerie human qualities of the "creature" and as we know, many have tales to tell of spiritual and paranormal events within those encounters. These aspects of Bigfoot encounters sometimes don't go over very well with the more pragmatic Bigfoot researcher. Are they afraid that somewhere along the line, Ketchum's research presents clues or evidence of "more" here?
Ketchum said in last night's interview that if she is rejected by peer reviewed journals she'll put it out to the public. That would be fantastic, but also a cruelly frustrating gift, since it will be ignored by science.

Running in at around 150 pages, the book begins with a welcome background section on Bigfoot that acts a great introduction for people new to the subject; and also provides snippets of little-known data that will be of great interest to the seasoned researcher. And then it's on to all-things hairy and large in Ohio...
The issue of whether or not the state of Ohio could indeed support Bigfoot activity is addressed (and answered); and some fascinating historical material on "First Nation" tales and legends of "Wild Men" is discussed.
I was particularly impressed by Chapter 4 - "Ohio Bigfoot in Review" - which reveals the sheer number of startling reports of man-beast activity in the state; both recently and in decades past. For those that want to learn more about Bigfoot activity that is not solely restricted to the Pacific Northwest, this chapter alone makes "Bigfoot Encounters in Ohio" essential reading.
Questions pertaining to Bigfoot activity and its habits are raised, the Patterson film-footage of 1967 is studied, and the reader is treated to a wealth of intriguing photographs and drawings that superbly complement the book's glossy pages.
Hancock House - the publishers of the book - have a large back catalog of Bigfoot titles, and in the coming weeks I will be reviewing more of their cryptozoological output.

On a semi related note, this idea of finding new species reminded me of a post I saw a few weeks back on boingboing. It was a technique used to "stabilize" the famous "Zapruder" film of the assassination of JFK. It is a pretty cool technique and really does make a difference to the shaky footage.
